Q This video must provide a clear sociological interpretation of the lyrics of one song. What song you choose is up to you, although I am happy to provide feedback on your ideas throughout the semester. A sociological interpretation of song lyrics involves the systematic and careful collection of data and the analysis of implicitly and explicitly presented codes, texts, narratives, images, and language. In other words, you are looking for sociological themes or anything amenable to sociological analysis. More specifically, you should be looking for and evaluating how society and its institutions, norms, values, ideologies, (in)equalities, power relationships, role expectations/deviations, and/or group behavior are reflected in the narratives. For example, you can address how race, gender, social class, and sexuality are presented by the artists. You could also analyze how messages of resistance, defiance, or capitulation to cultural norms or social inequality are presented. Additionally, you could focus on messages about the social organization of work, family, marriage and divorce, school, religion, or other major social institutions. Finally, you could examine how social problems are presented, such as homelessness, poverty, crime, discrimination, worker dissatisfaction, and unemployment. You are just now learning sociology, but as the semester marches on, you will be exposed to several other sociological concepts that you should think about using in your paper or video. Here is an example of song lyrics and some sociological themes: Breaking the Law by Judas Priest There I was completely wasting, out of work and down All inside it’s so frustrating as I drift from town to town Feel as though nobody cares if I live or die So I might as well begin to put some action in my life Breaking the law, breaking the law…. So much for the golden future, I cant even start I’ve had every promise broken, there’s anger in my heart You don’t know what its like, you don’t have a clue If you did you’d find yourselves doing the same thing too Breaking the law, breaking the law… Obviously, this song speaks to unemployment, poverty, social marginalization, the difficulty of gaining social mobility, and the subsequent anger leading to crime. The video should combine your own analysis with the integration of sociological concepts. As such, this assignment allows you creativity and flexibility but only to the extent that you directly ground your thoughts in aspects of the field of sociology.
